Description
Midazolam is a fast-acting benzodiazepine with strong anti-anxiety, amnestic, sleep inducing, anti-epileptic, muscle relaxing and calming properties. It is one of the few water-soluble benzodiazepines, and therefore very suitable for injection.
Midazolam is prescribed for Insomnia, severe agitation, epilepsy, continuous hiccups and as the well-known hospital rush. Tablet: works within half an hour after ingestion. The soothing feeling lasts up to 4 hours. Midazolam as a sleep aid works best if you use it occasionally. For example, no more often than once every 3 days in order not to get used to it. You can become dependent on Midazolam very quickly the longer you use it in succession, the more difficult it becomes to stop. If you want to get rid of the use, slowly reduce it in consultation with your doctor.

Unlike other benzodiazepines such as diazepam and lorazepam, midazolam is water soluble because the imidazole ring is open at a pH below 4. When midazolam is injected, the imidazole ring closes due to the weakly alkaline environment of the bloodstream (pH about 7.4), making it better in fat becomes soluble. This property makes it quickly absorbed into nerve tissue. This and the pKa value of 6.15, which means that midazolam is largely non-ionised in physiological conditions (> 90%), ensure a rapid action.
