Description
Flurazepam is a drug sold as a sleep aid. It belongs to the class of benzodiazepines. This medicine has a calming, muscle-relaxing effect and reduces anxiety. Take it half an hour before going to sleep. The effect lasts at least 14 to 16 hours. Only take it if you have at least eight hours to sleep after taking it. Flurazepam has a muscle relaxing, soothing and drowsy effect. It helps you fall asleep and sleep better. This drug is especially suitable if you have trouble falling asleep, if you expect to wake up frequently during the night, and if you need a remedy for anxiety and tension during the day.
Flurazepam has a very long duration of action and is therefore not useful at all as a sleep aid; reason why it is red in the Pharmacotherapeutic Compass. However, it is still used by people who can and / or do not want to stop, because withdrawal symptoms can occur when stopping. The agent should be phased out very slowly. Especially in the elderly, the drug will accumulate in the body. This can lead to falls, which is extra risky for the elderly.
